CLEMENS POOLE – RETURN TO THE 13TH FLOOR
Performative installation
19:30, Grant Restaurant of the Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel, Uzhhorod

SNRA Residence is pleased to present a performative installation by Clemens Poole at the opening of a group exhibition by Urban Re-Public and at the opening of the Community of Communities symposium. Clemens’ performative installation based around an assembly of sounds, objects, images, gestures, and spatial connections collected during his two research visits to Sorry No Rooms Available residency as part of the Community of Communities program. Return to the 13th Floor explores the recursive character of spaces and communities within the walls of the hotel, as each distinct floor is revealed through evolving loops of ambient sound and activated objects.

NOVOVORONTSOVKA: MUSEUMIZATION THROUGH ARTISTIC AND URBAN LENSES
Decolonial Reimagining of the Village’s Space and Heritage: From Historical Landscape to a Living Museum.

19:00, August 24-30, 2026, Grand Restaurant of the Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel.
Sorry No Rooms Available: partner support for the organisation for the exhibition in Uzhhorod.

Curatorial Team: Serhii Diachenko, Yuliia Manukian, Mykola Lukin.
Project Participants: Olesia Lukina, Vasyl Dmytryk, Mariia Honchar, Yuliia Danylevska, Yelyzaveta Yevseieva, Rina Khramtsova, Semen Khramtsov, Andrii Lopushynskii, Andrii Polshyn, Oleksandr Naselenko.

How can a settlement be transformed into a living museum, and its historical heritage into a resource for community recovery and development? We invite you to join the conversation on the decolonial rethinking of Novovorontsovka’s space and memory!
Cultural heritage is not a set of frozen artifacts behind glass, but a living fabric of memory that requires continuous reflection—especially today, as Ukraine frees itself from imperial and Soviet narratives. Novovorontsovka is a unique area within the Great Meadow and Black Sea steppe, where cultures, events, and human destinies have intersected for centuries. This project offers a broader perspective: viewing the settlement as a holistic cultural landscape where the museum extends beyond exhibit halls into the streets, architecture, natural environment, and daily stories of its residents.
Throughout the project, artists, architects, urbanists, and researchers from Odesa, Kherson, and other cities immersed themselves in museum archives, records, and local accounts. Their work resulted in artistic visions and urban scenarios for the future. A key focus of this reinterpretation is a decolonial perspective and the inclusion of the contemporary Russo-Ukrainian war—capturing the community’s experience of resistance, loss, and daily resilience.
This exhibition does not offer rigid solutions or finalized plans. Instead, it serves as an open invitation to dialogue with the community—residents, youth, educators, veterans, and museum workers—who are the true co-creators of this space. Local history can become a catalyst for growth, and cultural heritage a foundation for modern identity.

The project is part of the “Revival of Small Towns in Kherson Region: Decolonial Artistic and Urban Practices” program, implemented within the Ukrainian-Swedish “Community of Communities” framework supported by the Swedish Institute.

We’d like to share wonderful news – From August 24th-28th, 2026 a symposium for the COMMUNITY OF COMMUNITIES project will be held in Uzhhorod which will be attended by representatives of the five project partners: SNRA (Uzhhorod), Baltic Art Center (Visby, Sweden), Milvus Artistic Research Center (Knislinge, Sweden), Precarnia (Kyiv), and Urban Re-Public (Kherson/Odesa). In Uzhhorod, they will be joined by Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas, the project’s external advisors. The symposium will be hosted by Sorry No Rooms Available (SNRA). During the symposium, the participants will share and discuss the work that they have conducted in the frame of the project, including through a series of public events—an exhibition, sound installation, artist’s talk, and publication launch. In addition to these programs, the participants will also conduct excursions to various cultural institutions and initiatives in and around Uzhhorod. The symposium program is developed by Petro Ryaska with Alex Fisher, Anna Norberg, and Helena Selder.

The Festival of Naked Forms, in collaboration with Sorry No Rooms Available, presents the Czech-Ukrainian ‘Festival of Architectural Naked Forms’, which combines manifestos on naked bodies – both those of performers and architectural forms. Through art, and in particular performance art and its inherent nudity, the project draws attention to the protection of architectural cultural heritage, especially during the russian-Ukrainian war, when cities in Ukraine are disappearing as a result of russian bombing and other factors. The venue for the performance festival is the SNRA residence on location at the Intourist-Zakarpattia hotel complex, which combines an architectural phenomenon, a social context, a cultural cross-section and a historical narrative. In particular, the hotel building is a monumental 15-storey example of Brutalist architecture, built in 1979.

The sustainability of nudity means strengthening resilience and inner artistic power, leading to independence from adverse conditions, whether climatic, financial, or political. The Festival of Nude Forms seeks sustainability. It aims to maintain awareness that preserving nudity in art is important. Through nudity in art, universal values such as tolerance, openness, honesty, and solidarity are upheld. If we uphold these values in art, we will make artistic creation involving nudity sustainable for creators of all ages, all forms of expression, and all body types. FNAF aims to be sustainable in its own right as an independent platform. It wants society to remain open to nude art forms and to understand them as important for its own sustainability toward greater humanity.

STVORINNYA GROUP – VUZH MISTO (snake city)
15:00, June 26 – July 9, 2026, Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, Skansen.

We are pleased to present “Vuzh Misto” (Snake city), an exhibition of the new generation Stvorinnya group. In the exhibition, which will be held at the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, the zoo-anthropological and social image of the fantastic inhabitants of Uzhhorod will be shown. Considering the relativity of the existence of phenomena and attempting to look at us (humans) through the eyes of the animal world, the exhibition asks whether an animal can exist simultaneously with the dominant anthropocentric world and inquires after what and who will remain after the human era.
“They simply became snakes when suddenly something happened and changed them. Existing for some time, they did not even know that they were no longer the same. Another process is taking place. They cannot remember where they started, and in an attempt to adapt their memory blurred and returned somewhere where they had already been.”

ANTONIN BRINDA – BIG CITY LIFE
18:00, April 23, 2026, Double Room, Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel,

We cordially invite you to an artist presentation and a discussion of Antonin Brinda “Big City Life”. The artist will introduce examples of his previous performance works focused on urban space and political geography, realized in Ukraine and elsewhere. He will speak about his research conducted during the ongoing residency at the SNRA – particularly about the overnight project “Nightlife: Uzhhorod”. An open discussion will follow after the presentation. Looking forward to seeing you all on the 11th floor!

Antonín Brinda is a Czech performance and conceptual artist based in Europe. He graduated from various art and art theory programs in the Czech Republic and elsewhere. Brinda works mainly with performance and site-specific/urban art, exploring themes of global mobility, urbanism, and transport infrastructure. To counterbalance these serious subjects, he also creates performances that are more personal and humorous. Beyond his artistic practice, Brinda is active as an organizer and curator of performance art events and festivals. He would like to know, “How to make love with a city”.

The SNRA residence draws attention to the role of culture and art during the russian-Ukrainian war, aims to implement institutionally critical projects related to cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), development of artistic-cultural institutions.

Nightlife: Uzhhorod
On the night of April 19-20, 2026

Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine is the only region in the country where there is currently no curfew. Elsewhere in Ukraine, it is forbidden to stay outside during the night (specific times vary by region). As a response to this relative freedom of Zakarpattia, artist Antonín Brinda from the Czech Republic, current resident of SNRA, realises his performance-research “Nightlife: Uzhhorod.”

The artist will spend one night (from sunset until sunrise) in the public space of Uzhhorod. The aim of the project is simple: to enjoy the possibility of staying outside all night long, and observe the city and its changing rhythm. Throughout the night, the artist will post online one random photo from the action every full hour. The photos will be abstract so as not to reveal any critical infrastructure.

I am passionate about extensive urban environments, peripheries in various senses of the word, and the “nomadic” way of living. My mobile lifestyle is precarious yet voluntary. Aware of my privileges as a white male and EU passport holder, I strive to go beyond the notion of ordinary tourism and to reflect critically on issues related to international mobility and political geography through my art. Whenever possible, I step outside the “Fortress Europe” to learn, pay respect to, and connect with peoples and countries that Western paradigms describe as the “developing world”. I am a performance and conceptual artist. My venues include streets, playgrounds, parks, highways, shopping malls, rivers, housing estates, supermarkets, buses, trains, forests, fields, flats, bridges, pedestrian crossings, churches, monasteries, metro stations, staircases, boats, as well as art galleries. The main tools of my minimalist artworks are my body and the specific sites where the actions take place. The performances can last from a few minutes to many hours and be almost invisible or highly expressive. Through my art, I explore the role of the individual in the globalized, mobile world and the power structures that shape our daily lives and movements. My passion for performance art is both practical and theoretical. I am active within the scene as a curator and facilitator, give lectures and workshops, organize discussions, foster networks among cultural workers, and help popularize performance art among the general public.

18:00, February 14 2026, Double Room 1114, Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel.

Residence Sorry No Rooms Available is pleased to present Ksenia Platanova’s solo exhibition ‘One More Day’. Ksenia Platanova is an artist from Zaporizhzhia who has been living in Uzhhorod since the full-scale invasion.

A word from the author:
“Since childhood, I have needed special dolls with their own personalities. By creating them, I freed myself from traumatic experiences. The characters, objects, anthropomorphic masks, and portraits were created from things I found nearby. Paper, textiles, clay, plastic, food — mixed techniques and mixed feelings. Everything I do is a reaction to events that have happened or are happening. This is the most effective therapy for me. I have no formal art education, and I had to get used to being called an artist or even a sculptor. I consider frank conversation a real gift, and working together a special relationship.”

PHILIPPE MARCUS, MISHA ZAVALNY – TWO AUGUSTS
16:00, December 20, 2025, Korydor Gallery, 7a Stepana Dobosha Str., Uzhhorod.

The authors’ text:
Short history of the Two Augusts project: Two artists, Philippe Marcus and Misha Zavalny, meet in Paris shortly before Philip leaves for the residency “Sorry No Rooms Available” in Ukraine. They decide to buy two disposable film cameras and take photographs in parallel during the whole residency period: one in Paris, the other in Uzhhorod, a city in western Ukraine. Since they cannot share images, they choose to send each other short poems every day. Each artist then looks for a photo subject based on the poem, in the place where they are.The goal of the project is to create a book and an exhibition in which images and poems interact in a non-narrative way. Two parallel but very different realities. The artists, living at the same time in very different contexts, try to communicate through artistic media: photography and poetry.

NATALIA SHEVCHENKO – TUMORROW WILL BE CLOUDY WITH CLEARINGS
18:00, 30 October 2025, Double Room 1114, Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel.

Text by the author:
My project Tomorrow Will Be Cloudy with Clearings explores the experience of alienation, silence, and the search for home as a state of presence. I turn to moments when the familiar suddenly feels foreign, and silence opens new ways of perception.
Light, space, and pause are tools for working with memory and inner movement. I create situations that place the viewer at the boundary between body and light, between loss and calm, inviting them to experience a return to themselves.
The path in this practice is not a direction but a way of remaining in motion while accepting uncertainty. Movement becomes a form of trust, and coincidence — a guide where maps no longer work. The project touches upon the ability to stay within the process, allowing the current of experience to shape us.

ELENA SUBACH – LIGHT WAVES OF WARM COLOURS ARE THE FIRST TO BE ABSORBED BY WATER
18:00, October 30 – November 30 2025, Room 1416, Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel.

Text by the author:
At the core of my project Light Waves of Warm Colours Are the First to Be Absorbed by Water lie reflections on light, water, and the border. The work was inspired by Anna Atkins — the British naturalist and photographer who, in the nineteenth century, created the world’s first illustrated book using photography; her first images were prints of seaweed.
My own gaze turned toward plants that grow on the edge — between water and land, in the borderlands. If the human body is made up of sixty-five per cent water, what is the body of a plant composed of — one that touches two worlds every day?
In the cyanotype technique, light becomes an instrument of memory. On a surface coated with a light-sensitive iron solution, sunlight leaves an imprint — a reaction occurs, and the paper turns a deep blue. This colour is the trace of a wave carried by a photon, the final glimmer of warmth before it dissolves in water. They say light does not reach the full depth of a river, and not everyone can make it to the opposite shore. Perhaps this blue is the memory of an attempt to cross the threshold where the visible ends.
The exhibition combines handmade cyanotypes and direct photographs of the places I encountered during the Sorry No Rooms Available residency.

Text by the author:
“The shadow tells us where the light comes from.
In this space, consisting of two cubes that form a single room, the installation ‘The Shadow Tells Us Where the Light Comes From’ questions the idea of “point of view”.
This immersive work invites the viewer to enter a bubble where time seems to have stopped. A place where the absence, oscillate between the trace of what is no longer there and an invitation to what could be.
Where should we look?
What should we see?“

STVORINNYA GROUP – Maria-Gabriella Fediaieva, Masha Pelishenko, Vitalina Boikiv, and Svitlana Zapryliuk form a new-generation art collective. The collective was established in 2023 in Uzhhorod, Transcarpathia, where its members live and work. Together, they experiment with painting, graphics, installation, media art (new media), and performance. What unites them is a shared desire for personal expression.
The collective develops both individual and social themes, engaging with issues of identity, the human being in society, and inter-social and inter-gender relations, among others. They also address urban challenges: in the performance Overlapping the Uzh River (2024, Uzh River, Uzhhorod), the artists critically opposed the illegal development of Uzhhorod and the destruction of architectural heritage by developers.
In their first exhibition Maruda (Red Bar Yama, Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel, Uzhhorod), the group presented their personal stories as distinct “narrative objects” – the problems they wished to raise, the concerns of each member, and their self-explorations of war, childhood, memory, trauma, lived experiences, and processes of becoming. Art conversation
18:00, October 1, 2025, in the conference hall of the Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel, Uzhhorod.

Barbara Le Béguec Friedman (born 1982) is an artist based in Perpignan, France. Barbara practices visual and performance art. In 2005, she started exploring the dialogue between inner and outer landscapes through mediums such as drawing, video, sound, installation and photography. From 2010 to 2017 she focuses her research on the confrontation with otherness. Her work questions the idea of labelling and the impermeability of the boxes in which we try to evolve. The notion of paradox is deeply present in her work, through the ideas like : nothing exists without its opposite, absence is a form of presence or every boundary is also a meeting point… ideas she often used as a way of questioning, of challenging once again what appears to be a single fixed reality.

Presenting unknown archival video, Natalia Shevchenko draws attention to neglected recordings that document the cultural atmosphere of a particular time and represent how art and artists interacted with society, institutions, politics, and other cultural phenomena. A rare video by Olexander Sabov from the 1998 group exhibition ‘Museum and Contemporary Art’ at the Y. Bokshay Art Museum, curator Volodymyr Dehtiariov, initiated by the PopTrans group, accidentally captures a performance by artist Natalia Shevchenko. As a means of visual documentation, the recording allows us to preserve and, in a certain way, convey the performance as a work of art that, by its nature, exists within a specific time frame.

The Sorry No Rooms Available residence is pleased to present the participant Natalia Shevchenko in July-September, 2025, in the Swedish-Ukrainian project Community of Communities

Natalia Shevchenko (b. 1982) is an artist from Uzhhorod. She studied at the A. Erdely College and the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts in Uzhhorod. In the late 1990s, she joined the art group Poptrans, one of the first in Ukraine to combine conceptualism with pop art. The members experimented with postmodern forms, rejecting modernist conventions – which distinguished them in the Ukrainian art scene of that time.
Beginning with collective practice, Natalia gradually developed her own artistic language, marked by consistency and depth. Her paintings are characterised by deliberate plasticity and the symbolism of images, while the compositions often resemble film stills. Her visual thinking is close to that of a director: every detail contributes to the overall impression.
For Shevchenko, the line is the principal tool – one she transforms according to her idea. In her graphic works, there is no randomness: they are complete and precise, often bordering on decorative art in their exacting execution.
In her art, Shevchenko reflects on the pressures faced by individuals in the contemporary urban environment. The central themes of her work are women’s rights, freedom of expression, and the role of women in both art and traditional society. A special place is given to children’s role-play as a way of grasping and mirroring reality – a tool through which the artist explores social roles, cultural codes, and the deep mechanisms of identity formation.

Sorry No Rooms Available residence is pleased to present an Art Conversation with Alicia Zaton, Léa Mercier, Philippe Marcus

at 6:00 PM, August 12, 2025 in the Conference Hall of the Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel, Uzhhorod.

Alicia Zaton works around the animism of matter, filling her sculptures with secrets and stories. Her work is close to the body, its sensations and gestures. An architecture of intimate spaces, lived in by fluids, objects, materials and memories (wax, mirrors, tiles, latex, ceramics, archives). Her empirical research is shaped by her Polish origins and – more recently – by the search of femininity as an ancestral, hybrid and political body. A form of spirituality combining fragments of christian religion, alchemy, feminism and witchcraft.

Léa Mercier is a visual artist and independent photographer who lives and works in Paris. She creates “photographic objects” that dissect the processes of image production to offer alternative perceptions and uses, in installations that take into account the viewer’s presence and the exhibition space.

ALICIA ZATON participant of the residence Sorry No Rooms Available in August-October, 2025

Born in France in 1989 Alicia Zaton was graduate in 2014 from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris Cergy. Alicia Zaton’s work crosses different timeframes and materials. Sculpture, installation, scenography and photography. She develops an empirical, intuitive and sensitive relationship with matter. Her research has led her to discover a variety of techniques, including glassblowing, metallurgy and molding. Since 2014, her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries, institutional and alternative spaces. She also participated in some group shows in Paris, Berlin, Krakow and Tcheque Republic. For several years now, she has been developing scenography work in collaboration with dancers, with an organic feel, working with matter, ice and fluids. She is involved in the creation and development of DOC! in Paris since ten years, where she organise with her collective various events like talks, exhibitions, projections or concerts.

MARCUS PHILIPPE participant of the residence Sorry No Rooms Available in August-October, 2025

BARBARA LE BÉGUEC FRIEDMAN participant of the residence Sorry No Rooms Available in July-September, 2025

She participated in the Festival FNAF, Prague (Czech Republic) in 2023 ; SITE site responsive performance art interventions, Upper Culand Pit, Burham (UK) in 2022 ; 6th edition of the International Performance Festival CORPOREA, Zacatecas (Mexico) in 2020 ; the IMAF Festival, NoviSad(Serbia) in 2019; the 1st MHPAB Morni Hills Biennial of Performance Art, Kurukshetra & Chandigarh (India) in 2016; the 15th International Performance Art Festival OPEN and at the international performance art tour ARTNOW LiveTour| from Beijing to AnYang, Beijing (China); the MPA-B 2012 & 2015| Performance Art Month – Berlin ; AFIAC 2015 ‘Des artistes chez l’habitant’ 16th edition, Fiac (France) and the NUIT BLANCHE 2013 | 5th edition of the FRASQ, Paris (France).

The Sorry No Rooms Available residence is pleased to present the participant of the residence Johana Kotišová in June-August, 2025.

Johana Kotišová is Assistant Professor in Documentary and Journalism at the University of Amsterdam. She has a background in journalism, social anthropology, and sociology. Johana’s research interests include crisis and conflict documentation, creative professionals’ safety, emotional labour, and mental well-being. Her work has been published in journals such as JournalismDigital JournalismInternational Journal of Press/Politics, Journalism Studies, and European Journal of Communication. She is also the book reviews editor of Media, War and Conflict. Besides her academic work, Johana occasionally writes journalistic stories and works with creative professionals as a mental well-being counsellor.

The project I work on at Sorry No Rooms Available focuses on creative professionals who document war crimes. It explores the many complexities and potential points of friction involved in war crime documentation: combining journalistic practices with legal and criminal standards and discourses, using diversity of new epistemological practices and tools, and dealing with technological and cybersecurity issues, ethical questions, and mental pressure. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Ukraine and beyond and interviews with creative/media professionals, the project addresses the following questions: How do creative professionals documenting war crimes navigate differences between journalistic and legal epistemological practices and tools for gathering testimonies and visual material? How do they integrate new roles, norms, values, concepts in their creative professional identities? How do they rethink and reshape their relationships to and boundaries with criminal and legal institutions?

Photography as testimony and search
18:00, 16.05.2025, Double Room 1114, Intourist Zakarpattia Hotel

I invite to an open conversation where I will share my own experience of working with photography in the context of the great war – how my practice has transformed, what I have faced, and why it is sometimes important not to have answers right away.
We will talk about how photographic thinking changes in times of instability, how to find a form for vulnerable topics, and what it is like to be an artist in a time when reality is often stronger than any metaphor.

We will also touch upon the question of the boundaries and status of photography:
Is it a contemporary art today?
And how to combine documentary with artistic expression?

Mariia Luiza Filatova was born in Zaporizhzhia. Graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. Works mainly with oil painting. After the start of a full-scale invasion, the main subject of the artist’s works becomes the landscape of her native city, brought to the status of a sign. In 2022 and 2023, the artist spends a long time in Japan on an art residency, this experience establishes in her works the inherent meditativeness and tendency to simplify the form.

an attempt to feel how something lives, decomposes,

In a time of destruction, uncertainty and constant threats, values are changing. Materiality is being undermined by reality every day, and the ephemerality of performance becomes an even more expressive living sign for the “now”. Presence, which we constantly talk about in performance art, is now taking on a sacred meaning because it is about life. Energy, color, temperature as a sign and evidence of “being”. And we come back to the body. The wounds and vulnerability of the body, the physical, mental, historical, and memory body. “Camouflage has become a layer that sticks to the body, it has become a ‘mental tattoo’-you can try to remove it, erase it, but it will leave a trace.”

Project presentation
The Subcarpathian Ruthenia context in itself
18.30, April 16, 2025, Double room 1114, hotel Intourist Zakarpattia

The artistic research project is based on research of archival materials (films, photographs) from the period 1919-1939 from the area of Transcarpatia and filming with witnesses and archivists in Ukraine. The aim of the project is to subject the archival film prints and photographs from the Czechia, Slovakia and Ukraine to a postcolonial reading, cataloguing and making them available (in the process of repatriation).
Central European countries such as Czechia are marked with the term colonial exceptionalism, which means that even though the countries didn’t have any colonies they still benefit from the global colonialism economically and culturally. The main question of the project is if we could see some resemblance of colonialist practices also in the short period of time when Subcarpathian Ruthenia was part of Czechoslovakia in 1919–1939.
The research project has already started with the interpretation of the photographic and ethnographic work of well-known Czechoslovak ethnographer Vojtěch Suk, however the main focus of the research nowadays is on the archival film prints, amateur and experimental filmmaking.

Tomáš Vobořil is an artist, photographer, filmmaker and film programmer from Prague (Czechia). He received bachelor degrees from Film Theory and History and also from Photography in Prague where he currently studies at Centre of Audiovisual Studies (FAMU). Elena Subach, participant of the residence Sorry No Rooms Available in April-May, 2025

Elena Subach (1980) is a Ukrainian visual female artist originally from Chervonohrad, she currently lives and works in Lviv. Her artistic practice focuses on the exploration of memory, space, religion, tradition, the construction of history, and the consequences of the Soviet colonial past. She works with themes of the fragility of human bodies, death and war.

In her work, Elena often refers to liminal spaces as a visual metaphor for the internal state of a person experiencing change, loss or rethinking of experience. She works with photography and collage as a means of archiving and reconstructing memory, combining staged and documentary images.

Elena’s photographs have been published in numerous media, including the British Journal of Photography, Weltkunst, Vogue Poland, The Guardian, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and many others. She has received a number of awards, including the New East Photo Prize from the Calvert Foundation (2016), the Future Talents nomination (2019) and the Gaude Polonia scholarship (2019). Silence of the Muses, or what I did in 2022-2024

I invite to a meeting where I will talk about my works of 2022-2025 and the initiatives I participated in. In particular:
“Open Workshop” in the Lutsk Art Gallery – a social practice of free art classes for everyone, including children and IDPs. Methods of documenting volunteer movements are my personal experience. An archive of gestures of solidarity and public social acts. Ways to talk about “our war” in Ukraine and in the world. An inner duty to include oneself in the “social”. How can an artist be useful in times of war?
You are welcome – we want to hear your thoughts and stories about art, documenting, war, fears, inspiration, communities, and our present.

Unfinished unfinished buildings

The residence Sorry No Rooms Available and the Korydor Gallery are pleased to present the project and exhibition “Unfinished unfinished buildings” by Oleg Perkovsky, which was supposed to be presented on July 10, 2024 at the Korydor Gallery, but due to Oleg’s mobilization to the ranks of the National Guard on July 9, 2024, the exhibition “Unfinished unfinished buildings” was postponed to the present occasion.

“Stories do not end, or are complete in their incompleteness, but Oleg Perkovskyi presents unfinished buildings as completed, or rather perfect works of art of an architectural structure, which in particular integrates the reinforced concrete object of unfinished construction into visual art. The “brutalist” unfinished buildings that we see mostly in the urban landscape contain a lot of information, including the imprint of historical time, which conveys the political, economic, social and other crises. Recalling the work of the architect, which is part of the economic and non-legal system of developers, and the system of “urbanization” itself, which is expanding thanks to unfinished buildings, the author presents the world as a Great Unfinished Building that is constantly not being completed.”
Petro Ryaska

“After the full-scale russian invasion, one part of the construction projects remains unfinished, while the other part, turning into a mixture of construction dust and missile fragments, disappears. The column of unfinished construction is tilted and turned into a notebook with notes on the likelihood or impossibility of the appearance of a future building designed in the recent past.”
Oleg Perkovskyi

Oleg Perkovskyi’s project “Unfinished unfinished buildings” was created by him on a scholarship from the MOCA NGO/UEAF – in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and co-supported by a grant from The Académie des beaux-arts in Paris (French Academy of Fine Arts)

“The oak trees planted by Andrii, were grown from acorns, the pear, the apple trees, were tended and grafted together by friends, the sycamore and walnut trees were planted by Viktor, each tree on its own stone. The labyrinth grew around a wild pear tree, a sycamore so perfectly shaped that it seems to be painted. Tall oaks like two people, a small oak like a person, a desire to be with them, my soul is torn, I didn’t think I would disassemble a labyrinth made of stones that people brought from all over the world with my own hands, a desire to save the trees, Oleh is silent about what worries him, what is difficult to talk about, to hide, what cannot be talked about.
“My Secret Garden” is a story about a secret and creative garden on the outskirts of Perechyn, about the interaction of a group of artists and friends and their place of strength, about difficult times, about how they lived and listened to music together from which they took”.

Text by curator Oleksandr Lyapin:

The title of the exhibition is “Naïve is not naïve” because it is naïve in form, but global in content. The exhibition is one of the results of the research program on naïve art of Transcarpathia, supported by the art residence “Sorry, no rooms”. Its goal is to show the diversity of this powerful art movement in the region and the dynamics of its development. In the course of the work, we only managed to emphasize some of them in order to outline further research paths. Due to the fact that most artists are not members of official creative unions and do not lead an active public life, it was radically difficult to find them. Sometimes we just asked sellers in coffee shops, and even taxi drivers helped us. That’s how we found landscape painter Stas Andrievsky, who organized an exhibition and sale of paintings right on the street, artist, restaurateur, gallery owner, film buff Serhiy Kolodnytsky, and muralist Kateryna Tuz. We contacted 106-year-old artist Ilya Brovdi from the village of Kolchyno. The local visionary artistic community was enriched by artists who were forced to come here since the beginning of the full-scale war. Anastasia Tymchenko lived in Mariupol. Olena Alyabieva came from Kharkiv.
In creating the exhibition, we tried to show not only the diversity of styles and techniques, but also the dynamics and directions of development of the art of auto-didacts. We also tried to emphasize their peculiar artistic and philosophical power. Thus, in naïve art, the very act of transmitting an internal state, an experience, the very desire to express oneself without filtering, a kind of intention, a peculiar form of conceptualism, is valuable.

Oleksandr Liapin, participant of the residency Sorry No Rooms Available in October-November, 2024

Born in 1956 in the village of Novove near Boyarka, Kyiv region. In 1982 he graduated from the Horky Kyiv State Pedagogical Institute. He lives in Kyiv. An artist, curator, researcher of contemporary Ukrainian photography and folk non-traditional art, teacher at the School of Contemporary Art. One of the curators of the Naïve Art Festival (2020). Since 2009, I have been researching non-traditional folk art, known as naïve art, art brut, insider art, art of autodidacts, art of outsiders, singular art, primitive art, etc. Interpreting naïve art as a holistic phenomenon will help to understand the interactions between artistic culture and social life. Nowadays, there are many female combatants among the artists of this trend, and they have a need for a life-saving artistic expression. Naïve art is an expression of the national mood, worldview trends, and political experiences. Thus, by studying the artistic aspect of naïve art, one can decode it.

Unfortunately, not a single contemporary naïve artist from Transcarpathia in general and Uzhhorod in particular is known to the general public. There are no names of contemporary Transcarpathian naïve artists in the encyclopedic edition “Ukrainian Naïve Art of the XX-XXI centuries” (2020). During the residency, I plan to conduct research in the field of contemporary naïve art of Uzhhorod, introduce new names into scientific circulation, as well as into the context of contemporary Ukrainian art, prepare articles about Uzhhorod (Transcarpathian) naïve, organize an exhibition of works by these artists, and possibly make a joint project with them in the studio.

The Sorry No Rooms Available residence is pleased to present the participants Dana Brezhnieva and Natalka Diachenko with the project “Photo Atelier of Wonders by Dana and Natalka” in the October 2024

The project Photo Atelier of Wonders by Dana and Natalka was first realized in the town of Yasinia, Transcarpathia, as part of the Fantasery Festival in 2023. The project was conceived as a migratory initiative following the centers of Ukrainian refugees who had to leave their homes due to the full-scale aggressive russian invasion, relocating to relatively safer parts of their country and the world. Over the past year, the project’s target audience has expanded to include volunteers, veterans’ wives, military personnel, and anyone who wishes to take advantage of the unique opportunity to visit the photo studio in exchange for a donation to the Armed Forces. Dana and Natalka provide makeup, hairstyling, and photo portraits, and through a written survey, they conduct an interdisciplinary study of participants’ attitudes toward their appearance, including attempts to trace changes related to forced displacement, loss of homes, and loved ones.
Dana Brezhnieva, a psychologist by education, has been taking an eighteen-month course in trauma psychology and PTSD since the onset of the full-scale war. She is an independent curator and activist. Natalka Dyachenko is a photographer and researcher of Ukrainian regions. Group text:

“Everything that is about to be said is already in the past. All that the artist wants to show us is what he has already done, what will create his history, the history of his personal project, what he presents as a gift to Eternity with a sense of great secrecy. But we have already started talking about plans for the future. There is a common question at the end of all interviews. It’s a sticky, obsessive desire to somehow stay in eternity, to cling to something, to something. Or maybe you could just ask someone to throw you out to sea when the time comes, so that only the fish would know that you existed (that you was). This idea is very intoxicating with its poeticism, the feeling of being involved in something almost imperceptible, and attracts with the prospect of dissolving into the great and again eternal. But what is this fuss about inscriptions on the land for? Why do we constantly read these extremely important messages for someone like: “Vasya was here”? What do they tell us? Were they here? They want someone to know about them, to remember them. But why? No one knows who this Vasya is. Sometimes there is still a date. Maybe the person plans to return to this place from time to time. “I came under this tree,” reads one of the inscriptions carved into the bark of a tree on Pohulanka in Lviv. In the end, it is clear that this is about memory.

Ruslan Tremba and Oleh Suslenko formed the art group They, which in fact has always existed, but Oleh and Ruslan just didn’t know it. On August 1, 2024, they found out that they were They: an art group consisting of two artists with a wandering artistic orientation. It must be said that, in addition to another step towards finding themselves in time and space, Ruslan and Oleh are quite interesting, talented, hardworking, intelligent, sensitive, skillful, beautiful, creative, resourceful, funny, sometimes sad, sometimes emotional living people. Each of them has done a lot to make this true, but at the same time, many in the contemporary Ukrainian art industry can confidently say that no, they haven’t. And they would be very close to the truth. Today, they are: Oleh Suslenko and Ruslan Tremba multiply their efforts by two in an attempt to understand where they came from and what they came with. The artists’ joint project They Were Here, which they present at the residency Sorry, No Rooms Available at the Zakarpattia Hotel, is another answer to a homework assignment that each of the participants asked themselves instead of the teacher. What did you do when you were at the SNRA residency? What you did in these two months. What they did when they were here”.

Oleg Kharch – Fakemet and others
18.00, September 6, 2024
Double room 1114, Hotel Intourist-Zakarpattia

We perceive a lot of information every day, without always checking its validity. We are used to believing everything we are told on TV and on the Internet, or simply even on the street. We ourselves are carriers of fakes when we do not check what is happening everywhere. The installation (video work) gives us the right to choose whether to believe what we were told or to find additional information, to check what was said, to rethink every word. Only when we learn to perceive information correctly, we will be able to survive in the conditions of fakes that are constantly surrounding us.

Only now, my re-evaluation has gained completeness, or at least the illusion of awareness of the scale of the historical catastrophe on a personal level, an internal family drama and as a whole for our national Ukrainian and human identities. Reflections (also in a parallel way) on what was experienced by my generation, born in the 60s, in relation to the traditions from earlier generations, parents and even grandfathers are more difficult, this is not my achievement. The experience of the Soviet era is traumatic, negative and personal. In art, visual objects of the Soviet era and textual content are always overt or hidden sarcasm. In particular, in the presentation “Fakemet and other”, I plan to show a video inspired by the experience of serving in the ranks of the army at that time, in which I implement the material of cultural heritage, raising the critical issue of trauma memory. Turning to facts from the pre-Soviet past, or even mythology, is an attempt to reinterpret historical heritage. Which is my artistic expansion.

Female Artist Ksenia Platanova was born in Zaporizhzhia. After the full-scale invasion, she moved to Uzhhorod. She works in the genres of sculpture, installation, and photography. The main materials she uses in her works are clay, plastic, textiles, metal and food. Mixed techniques evoke mixed feelings. This is what the artist seeks when working with such topics as taboo and sexuality. “Everything I do is a reaction to events that have happened or are happening. By creating sculptures and objects I get rid of traumatic experiences. Vivid images give me the opportunity to plunge into a fictional parallel world.” “I consider frank conversation and collaboration with talented people to be the most valuable gift. Lizaveta German, participant of the residence Sorry No Rooms Available in August 2024

Lizaveta German is an art historian, researcher, and curator. Since 2014, she has been working with Maria Lanko on curatorial and educational projects. In 2018, they co-founded The Naked Room gallery in Kyiv, and in 2022 co-curated the National pavilion of Ukraine at the Venice Biennial. Inspired by their first field trip to Uzhhorod in 2014 as well as by the local art scene, Lizaveta and Maria started their curatorial journey and, in particular, launched media platform Open Archive. Lizaveta’s research interests include the art of the Sixties and the history of curatorial practices in Ukraine and internationally. In addition to programming and daily tasks at The Naked Room, Lizaveta is currently working on a book of interviews about exhibitions and institutions in Ukraine during the full-scale war. She also dreams of completing, in collaboration with the artist Lucy Ivanova, a comic book about her experience of combining curatorial work and raising a baby. Lizaveta lives in Kyiv, where she just returned after a 2-year temporary stay in Vienna.

Members of the Kruzhka Esmarkha art group Ruslan Tremba and Oleg Suslenko announce to everyone who reads this message that on August 1, 2024 they will leave the Kruzhka Esmarkha art group and form a new art group They. The newly created art group They consists of the following members: Ruslan Tremba and Oleg Suslenko. The Kruzhka Esmarkha art group was founded on May 1, 2009 (members: Viktor Melnychuk, Ivan Nebesnyk, Ruslan Tremba, Oleg Suslenko and special guest Mykhailo Khodanych). Immediately, starting on August 1, Oleg Suslenko and Ruslan Tremba will start work on a new joint project as part of the newly formed art group They at the “Sorry, no rooms available” art residency, which will be presented in two months, i.e. after the end of their stay at the residency. Oleg Kharch participant of the residence Sorry No Rooms Available in August – September 2024

Oleg Kharch was born in the city of Sumy in 1963. From 1980 to 1985 he studied at the Faculty of Construction Technology in Dnipro (then the Dnipropetrovsk Engineering and Construction Institute). 1981-83 studied at the art studio of Stanislav Cherevko in Dnipro (Dnipropetrovsk). In my naively surrealist works, I highlight a parallel reality that constantly gravitates towards the deconstruction of current historical events, both in the personal life of an average Ukrainian (me) and in the socio-political theater (conditional society). Thanks to the texts-images, I have the opportunity to narrow the field of the viewer’s imagination, thereby achieving the maximum sharpness in the ideological expression and bringing the concept to an almost grotesque (where comedy, sarcasm or irony is present) degree of the angle of view of the consumer of the fruits of my efforts. Thematically, it can be personal history, socio-political upheaval, historical mythology, human impact on the environment.

Oleg Kharch is a Ukrainian contemporary artist working in the figurative direction of current art. The New naive (or as noted by the art critic and historian Oleh Sydor-Hibelinda – quasi-naive), which was manifested in the artist’s work with quotations from the post-conceptual era in various modern techniques. His art is immersed in paper collage, assemblage, traditional painting, and street projects. Also in digital art, video works, installations, performative practices and various internet media. Oleg raises the question “Who are we, where are we from and where are we going?”.

Over the years, the artist has participated in numerous (over 60) personal and group exhibitions, including in such important institutions: the 4th and 5th Odesa Biennials, KYIV ART WEEK 2019 in Ukraine, as well as Portugal – XXII Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira, USA – Art Museum of Torrance and Italy “Ukraine: Stories. Contemporary artists”, MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome. The author’s works are in the Kmytiv Museum of Fine Arts named after Y. D. Bukhanchuk, Imago Mundi Collection owned by the Italian collector Luciano Benetton, and the painting “Renovation – state of mind” from the series “This is how they earn” is part of the Mystetskyi Arsenal museum collection. The author’s handwritten book of the artist “Watna Accounting” from November 2023 was acquired in the collection of manuscript collections of the Library of the Princeton University of the State of New Jersey.

“And then the monks said:
Take a good look at the horses. Now they are frozen. But as soon as the horses move, one empire will die.”
“Horses of St. Mark, or a novel about Troy” – Mylorad Pavych

“After a full-scale Russian invasion, one part of the construction projects remains unfinished, and the other, turning into a mixture of construction dust and rocket fragments, disappears. The column of unfinished work is tilted and turned into a notebook with notes on the probability or impossibility of the appearance of a future structure designed in the recent past” – Author’s text

“Stories do not end, or are completed in their incompleteness, but Oleh Perkovskyi presents unfinished works as completed, or more precisely, consummate works of art of an architectural structure, which, in particular, integrates the reinforced concrete object of unfinished construction into visual art. The “brutalist” unfinished buildings that we observe mostly in the urban landscape, in particular the imprint of the historical time, which conveys the political, economic, social crisis and more. Recalling the work of the architect, whose work is in the economic and not the legal system of developers, and the system itself of “urbanization” that is expanding due to unfinished buildings, the author represents the world as a Great unfinished building, which is constantly not completed perfectly” – Text by Petro Ryaska

Oleg Perkovskyi’s project “Unfinished unfinished buildings” was created by him on a scholarship from the MOCA NGO/UEAF – in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts

What should be the role of culture and art during the Russian-Ukrainian war, when there are many millions of forcibly resettled Ukrainian citizens, when cities in Ukraine disappear as a result of Russian bombings, Ukrainian culture and people are destroyed, the question of life and, in particular, places of residence is raised in some vague but important form of aspiration. The project includes attempts to understand the history of urban planning and state-building aspects through art, images of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. In particular, what to do with the cultural heritage, which was built during a traumatic period in the history of Ukraine. Does this legacy have historical, cultural and economic value? How to look at architecture and whether architecture and monuments can speak for themselves, remaining a witness to history. The attempt of cultural intervention of traumatic historical and cultural objects in the modern humanistic context makes it possible to create a museum of history. Preserve the value of the critical memory of history and deprive the material cultural visual heritage of the propaganda content of the colonial imperial past. The project raises the difficult question of how to look at the history and preservation of cultural heritage from a historical, social, and cultural point of view from the perspective of the reality of today’s military expansion of russia against Ukraine.

An inconvenient legacy
Dmytro Solovyov

I have spent the last two months researching the architecture of Uzhhorod the second half of the 20th century – the time when Uzhhorod became part of Ukraine. At that time, modernism reigned throughout the world, and Uzhhorod had two stages of construction in this style – Czechoslovak modernism and Ukrainian Soviet modernism.
Czechoslovak heritage is respected in Uzhhorod. It is loved, research projects are dedicated to it, and books are published about.
What cannot be said about the Ukrainian architecture of the Soviet period. Many Ukrainians often do not understand it, actively stigmatize it and even reject it as foreign. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the systematic destruction of our heritage should have united Ukrainians around it, but the opposite happened. We branded the Ukrainian Soviet heritage as hostile and began to actively destroy it, actually helping the russians in this. And forgetting that this architecture and mosaics were created by Ukrainians, professional architects and artists who tried to create a comfortable and aesthetic urban environment. On the other hand, the modern dictatorship of developers, for whom the only goal is profit, which turns our cities into solid ghettos from the gas block, confuses few people.
Will we have time to accept and make sense of our uncomfortable legacy before we destroy it completely?
Photographs of modernist architecture of Uzhhorod from 1960-1980, presented at the exhibition, demonstrate the synthesis of ultra-modern features of world modernist architecture and elements of folk architecture and folk art of Ukraine, imprinting the identity of Transcarpathia in the 20th century.

Author’s text:
“War haunts everywhere, it prevents one from fully living and functioning. Due to stress, burnout occurs, the desire to communicate, interact with people, and do anything disappears. An emotional pit appears, from which it is difficult to return to a normal state. There are gaps that cannot be filled. The exhibition presents stitched objects, which became for the author an attempt to rethink the medium with which she worked in childhood, through the realities of today. Each of the works is an imprint of processes and feelings that have become an integral part of everyday life – the need to communicate, be active, act. During the two years of russia’s full-scale invasion to the territory of Ukraine, it is becoming increasingly difficult to hold on and not be weak and vulnerable. The exhibition space is a manifestation of weakness, a kind of shell where chaotic feelings are mixed.”

Author’s text:
“When the sea dried up, deposits of rock salt and gypsum settled there. But after millions of years, underground water out of anger came to the surface to crush these treasures. Voids and sinkholes formed in their place, and the stench gradually began to smell of melt water and underground brines…”
The reference point for the wall painting made in the small hotel room of “Intourist-Zakarpattia” were two things: the canons of the Christian church fresco and the painting dioramas in the natural science museum.
The story in the painting begins with the story of the dry Perm Sea, the bottom of which today is salt deposits under a multi-meter layer of soil. The formation of humanity and the birth of mining are closely intertwined with the reflection on the last book of the New Testament – Revelation of John the Baptist (Apocalypse). The cycle of life from the birth of civilization to its total destruction looms large in this intimate space, just as constant thoughts of horror and danger coexist alongside the ordinary course of life with its everyday problems and joys. The project tells about the daily experience of war, with an expositional emphasis on the difficult process of falling asleep, panic attacks and insomnia experienced by the traumatized.“

Author’s text:

“The legacy of modernism is the most controversial in Ukraine, in particular because it fell entirely to the times of the Ukrainian SSR. Even before the full-scale invasion, it was quite a challenge to work with, but now both the stigmatization of the heritage and its defenders and the pace of destruction have reached a peak. The illegitimate president of russia, v. putin, brazenly declared that the entire legacy of the Soviet era belongs to russia, and many Ukrainians willingly agree with him. But isn’t it in vain? At the lecture, we will talk about the value of the heritage of Ukrainian modernism, the difficulties with its perception, and who benefits from its destruction. And will we be able to save something from the hammers of Ukrainian officials and “activists” in the fight against “Sovietism” and the anvil from russian missiles”

Author’s text:

This is, to some extent, an escapist project, work on which continues during the war of russia against Ukraine, at a time when almost all artistic plots are permeated by war.
Drawing landscapes from the labels of mineral waters of Transcarpathia refers not only to the relative peace in this region of Ukraine, but also to the loss of a significant part of the natural landscape and fauna of the North, East and South of the country.
The virtual world of mineral water labels transports us to an idyllic pre-war state, and the tension appears along with the realization that Ukrainian nature continues to be destroyed by russian war missiles and risks continuing its existence only in various images.
Concrete drawings of landscapes have a horizontal, which, unlike the vertical, still cannot provide absolute peace.

The utopian dream in the conditions of war survives and transforms, reflecting profound changes in society and its values. This process of transformation allows society not only to adapt to new conditions, but also to use these challenges as an opportunity to create a more deeply thought-out and sustainable future. Utopian ideals evolve with a changing society to remain relevant and inspiring.

Was born in Severodonetsk, Luhansk region in 1999. Lives and works in Kyiv. The female artist works with the medium of painting and the practice of collage, animation. In her works, the artist depicts architectural structures and structures, as well as landscapes, where she emphasizes the emptiness, hollowness and decay of these spaces. However, architectural elements in the works of the author appear as decorations of the urban space. Because in the center of the works, a thematically and figuratively significant place is occupied by the manifestation of human feelings, emotional states and social aspects of life.

In the wake of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, millions of Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes, fleeing cities under constant shelling and threat of occupation, and artists were no exception. As a response to these urgent challenges, cultural institutions had to rethink their own purpose and redirect institutional resources in order to help. Residencies have played a significant role among these places, and have developed into dynamic shared spaces for collaborating practices and reflection, and, more importantly, spaces for mutual care. Considering the new circumstances, the residency Sorry No Rooms Available, held at the Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel in Uzhhorod, at some point became a shelter and a potential further transition point to safer locations for a substantial part of the Ukrainian artists and cultural workers. Back then, the name of the residency, which comes from a phrase that would commonly be heard at the concierge desk in the 1980s when the hotel was at its peak, marked the traumatic experience of thousands of people forced to seek new places to live.

The exhibition Where are we now, after all those endlessly repeated words? takes its starting point from the Emergency Residencies for artists and art professionals from Ukraine, held in 2022 and aimed to support the Ukrainian cultural community. Bringing together works of its participants with practices of other Ukrainian artists, the exhibition intertwines personal stories and shared experiences of living through the war, while undergoing loss of home and forced relocation. Delving into the concept of a hotel as a temporary transit space, where anticipation and uncertainty imperceptibly alter it into a state of limbo, it suggests a journey through the spacious halls, abandoned hidden spots, and lonesome apartments in an attempt to reveal and reconsider the traces war has left in our history and in our lives. How do we imagine our return to previous plans and dreams, and when does the future we are constantly recalling in our conversations start?

The exhibition is part of the Kyiv Biennial 2023. Kyiv Biennial is an international forum for art, knowledge, and politics that integrates exhibitions and discussion platforms. It adopts an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of the humanities, socially engaged art, and political activism in order to reflect on the crucial issues of the contemporary world. The Biennial is organized by the Visual Culture Research Center.

Kyiv Biennial 2023 is held in partnership and with the support of: Asortymentna Kimnata, Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport, Department for Cultural Affairs of the City of Vienna, Dovzhenko Centre, ERSTE Foundation, Foundation for Arts Initiatives, Galeria Labirynt, Goethe-Institut, Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), L’Internationale, M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp), Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Museum Crisis Center, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Other Edges project (hablarenarte, KAIR, MeetFactory, Visual Culture Research Center), Sigrid Rausing Trust, Sorry, No Rooms Available, tranzit.at, tranzit.org (Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest, Cluj, Iași, Prague, and Vienna), and the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

In the just ideological work of Plato “The State” in the tenth book:

“Art and the perfect state are considered. Things in the world that art imitates are imitations of things themselves, so the artist is a creator of ghosts far from reality. An imitator artist does not know the true properties of objects, in his work he relies on the contradictory perception of the soul; art has no criteria of true and false. Art deals with the ignoble, helping it to overcome the intelligent. Therefore, in a perfect state, poetry should be only in the form of hymns to the gods and praise to virtuous people.” (from Wikipedia)

An artistic historical journey in search of a perfect and utopian town and village settlement. Perhaps similar to the worlds of Dante’s journey Divine Comedy, utopia is hell, an ideal settlement is paradise, and purgatory is a city with an unclear definition. From the history: Ideal Miletus, Plato’s ideal city, Piero della Francesca’s ideal city, Leonardo’s ideal city, utopian ideas about building an ideal city of the 18th century, the Garden City of the 20th century, Le Corbusier…, the capital of Brazil, utopian experimental demonstration villages of the USSR, the Soviet model of industrialization and urbanization, etc.

An attempt to review settlement patterns from the general to the detailed, both historically and socially and culturally. A critical contemplation of history from the perspective of the reality of the russian-Ukrainian war with the relevance of (re-)building the cities of Ukraine, drawing attention to the restorative immunity of the trauma of war in the world experience of wars.

The exhibition demonstrates a range of methods for engaging with urban-type built environments, recognising that each city is a) unique and b) always changing, as well as c) that different circumstances give rise to different approaches. Featured works focus on ‘small’ details and ‘large’ visions, looking from above, below, in-, and outside their chosen settings and subjects. Drawing on Sorry No Rooms Available’s network of collaborators from across Ukraine and the international community, the exhibition includes projects that address Uzhhorod as well as those related to phenomena in other locales, such as Dnipro and the semi-fictional Svetlograd. Some of the projects are archival and others are new and/or are being presented for the first time. In situating distinct works in correspondence with one another, the show purports to spark critical discussions about authorship and agency in the city.

The exhibition is staged at the Museum of Architecture and Life in Uzhhorod, an institution that was founded during the Soviet period, which includes a collection of architectural models and aims to portray different ways of being in Zakarpattia, and in Ukraine more generally. This will be the second exhibition that Sorry No Rooms Available realizes at the Museum. The exhibition thus represents a continuation of the residency center’s ambition to nurture relationships with other artistic and cultural institutions in Uzhhorod.

About a partnership between Sorry No Rooms Available (SNRA), Baltic Art Center (BAC, Visby, Sweden), Milvus Artistic Research Center (MARC, Knislinge, Sweden), and soma.majsternia (Lviv, Ukraine). The project furthers collaboration between SNRA, BAC, and MARC, which has been ongoing since 2020, and expands to include soma.majsternia, who bring their own expertise in performative practices. Together, the group will work on Kindling (from the English term for ‘fire starters’), a research project and dialogue between small and medium-size arts platforms operating in regional and rural areas.

Kindling proceeds on the conviction that residencies proverbially ‘light a fire’ in the communities they are situated in through their support of socially engaged artistic practices. The project takes the form of residencies with associated public programming. Each Kindling partner designs their own conceptual frame, customizing the project for their respective organization.

Over the course of Uzhhorod’s long existence, compelling ideas for its development arose. Some of them were implemented fully, others were partially realized, and still more have been distorted beyond recognition. Let’s t engage these ideas during our walks.
The first walk will take place on August 4 at 4:00 p.m, beginning from the Zakarpattia Hotel. City researchers Serhii Dyachenko and Yulia Manukyan, members of the Urban Re-Public organization, will lead the walk.

Maria Lanko, participant of the Sorry No Rooms Available residency in August, 2023.

Almost 10 years ago, in the winter of 2014, it was in Uzhhorod that Lizaveta Herman and I began our curatorial journey. Then we came at the invitation of the members of the Open Group to explore the art scene of Transcarpathia and Lviv.

It was the experiences of that trip that became the basis for my/our further work, and the relationships with the artists we met here were decisive. We marked them with “tags”: creating communities, temporality, informal galleries, everyday life, private, etc. But also – Petro Ryaska, Pavlo Kovacs J., Stas Turina, Anton Varga, Yura Biley…

Today, when there is less and less certainty in artistic practices, I am here again to check where it all is, where we all are.

Presentation of the practice, meeting and conversation with the participant of the SNRA residency, Kherson artist KAR.

KAR is an female artist from Ukraine. The coordinates of the work are 46.6558 north latitude and 32.6178 east longitude. In her works 2018-2021, KAR explores the terminological bottom of art (beauty=art=Kherson / subject of free pleasure=art=Ukraine), based on real events, combining the researched into samizat. On February 24, 2022, it captures the anti-metaphorization of the redemption of occupation art in Kherson during the full-scale act of russian invasion of Ukraine. “Zetivshchyna” seeps into the graphics, ceramics, textiles, collages of KAR’s thoughts, which the artist destroys before leaving on November 1, 2022, transporting the still-living art from occupied Kherson to the occupied Left Bank “by pieces of memory.” On February 10, 2023, the previously fixed objects-clapsticks pass the stage of border scanning for “basement” in the direction of Crimea — russia — Belarus — Latvia — Lithuania — Poland — Ukraine — Moldova. On February 21, 2023, KAR, immersed in Oberliht, decides to reproduce pieces of the work in “Staying You Can’t Run Away”, which were destroyed during the crossing of the Dnipro during the crossing to nowhere… On May 20, 2023, in Joensuu, the artist begins to create a new series of graphics “I love Kherson. Kherson loves me.” June 30, 2023 KAR goes to Uzhgorod to “Sorry, No Rooms Available”.

Author’s text:
The Imparted Space project is an attempt to archive the subtle matter of the space of the Zakarpattia Hotel as a gesture of faith, love and hope for the impossible reincarnation of lost well-being and serenity in its past state.
At the same time, it is a study of space as such, which is in itself self-sufficient, valuable and at the same time ephemeral – elusive precisely for man, as a temporal/mortal being, since space and time are fundamental components of the physical world. The preservation of the places and events significant for the subject is a means of combating the transience of life.
When time control is lost due to unforeseen circumstances, the effort to return to the lost order leads to the restoration of the past way of life in order to gain a sense of stability and security in the future.
After all, time is cyclical, prosperity and decline replace each other.

Text by Natalia Lisova:

Form is nothing but emptiness,

Emptiness is nothing but form.

Everything visible is empty.

The Heart of Irresistible Wisdom Sutra, beginning 3rd century

In Eastern wisdom, emptiness is perceived in a positive sense as a space that can be filled, a place to add something, while a filled form makes this process impossible and is complete in its development. The study of local territories by the participants of the exhibition by observing, identifying and emphasizing the special features of the local landscape, trying to feel its context, history, finding harmony in the process of artistic actions in the environment, revealing its potential, is an attempt to find and fill the empty places of picturesque corners of Uzhgorod with their own creative interaction with him. At the same time, the demonstration of artistic creations in the space of the Corridor gallery as a way of showing documentation is a forced condition because works of land art can exist only temporarily and are inseparable from their place of realization. In this way, the space of the gallery is actually not filled with proper Landart objects and remains free, just like the places of artistic actions, empty.

The Landart art movement originated in the United States in the late 60s of the 20th century. as a reaction of artists to environmental problems, as a protest against the consumerist society and the commercialization of art, and translated from English means “art of the earth”, creativity outside the gallery space opened a new field of activity for artists – nature. The idea of the movement was to leave the galleries and go out into the open space. Landart artists usually use natural materials: stones, trees, greenery, water in combination with artificial materials. This prevents land art from becoming part of the market system and turning into an aesthetic commodity, so in museums and galleries, land art can be seen through photo and video documentation.

Subsequently, in the 1990s, landart gave rise to a new language of creative interaction with nature in the territories of Ukraine. Domestic artists of environmental art consider the landscape as a means of self-identification and draw attention to the historical cultural space and reflect the deep-rooted mythic connections between cultural identity and natural processes. According to the artist Petr Bevza, “Ukrainian land art is characterized by “interweaving” and “adjustment”, which involves “minimum involvement of the environment as a means of activating human consciousness in the fight against the “prevailing cult of consumption (…)”, therefore Ukrainian artists define environmental art as “ the art of creating artistic images in the environment with the help of natural means, with the aim of identifying the environment as a source of eternally existing themes and ideas (…)”. Ukrainian artistic practice is aimed at removing man’s alienation from nature, realizing himself as a part of the common natural space, man’s continuous connection with the earth, the cosmos, which is the main feature of the Ukrainian mentality – love for the nature of the native land.

At the SNRA residence, curator Dana Brezhnieva continues her practice of finding and collaborating with young artists, so she immediately became interested in meeting the charming odessan Sofya Holubuieva. The artist had to leave her native home and moved to Berlin, where she studies, works and acts as a mouthpiece of Ukrainian culture, from where she raises funds to help Ukraine during the Russian invasion.

Sofia Holubuieva is a multidisciplinary Ukrainian female artist who is the author of paintings, graphics, performances, installations and videos. Among other topics, the artist works with the ideas of digitalization and the impact of technology on society. The history of painting and its modern functions are also a subject of her interest.

Closely connected with her family, Sofia often includes her loved ones in the process of creating projects. She focuses on the themes of her hometown and home, exploring issues of protection, limitations. She is interested in the ideas of the common and the individual, since she is a twin.

Sofia is a co-participant of the self-organized space in Berlin “UCC”, which, at first a full-scale invasion, existed as an artistic residence, gallery and meeting place for Ukrainians. During this time, the team organized many exhibitions, concerts, master classes, lectures, auctions and festivals.

Now, “UCC” is a bridge between Ukrainian artists and European institutions.

Evolution as a method of knowledge

Cognition is the driving force behind our meaningful existence, as a species in general and as individuals in particular. Cognition is a powerful factor that affects the properties of changes that occur with us and with the environment of our existence in time and space. Any process that we contemplate and in which we participate, knowing, and thus changing their directions, are evolutionary processes and must be considered in the general context, as the intersection of an incalculable number of facts in each of the billions of billions of moments of the present time.

At first glance, this exhibition presents seemingly unrelated statements that have different forms and different mediums. Each of these expressions is a slice of existence: a person, an animal, a place… They are an imprint of time and the processes that took place in it. All these processes have a different scale, however, they all have something more in common than gathering in one place now.

With the beginning of full-scale hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, thousands of people died, were injured, lost their homes, friends and relatives. Most of the de-occupied and demined territories are still dangerous for free movement. Such places include the locations of annual Landart festivals. 2022 was a turning point for the cultural center of the country, but the artistic community full of synergy is finding new ways of creative realization.

KINDLING – REFORM –

Viktor Pokydanets – сховкартон

Residences Sorry No Rooms Available / Baltic Art Center / Milvus Artistic Research Center

Transcarpathian Regional Art Museum named after Y. Bokshay

16.00, April 20, Zhupanatska Square 3, Uzhgorod

Curators: Alex Fisher – Petro Ryaska

The personal exhibition “hidcarton” (hidden cardboard, original name: skhovkarton) presents two new series of work by Viktor Pokydanets. The show includes works from the titular series of cardboards and ros. lit. The presented art has been created by Pokydanets at the residence of Sorry No Rooms Available.

“ros. lit”, Viktor’s cultural book vandalism, is his reaction to the life he lived in a country that can be described as a disguised iceberg of Soviet Russian nationalism – an iceberg which, since 1991, began to slowly emerge from under the cold water of ‘brotherhood.’ From 2014 and after 2022, Russia stopped masking the fascion of its national culture – as a consequence of which Viktor was forced to leave his native home in order to save his life and the life of his family members. Pokydanets’ subjective “book instruction” for language reform is presented visually in response to the war started by Russia against Ukraine.

V. Pokydanets invited Uzhhorod artist Ruslan Tremba to participate in three works in the “ros lit” series to produce.

Pokydanets’ cardboards exemplify several features of his artistic practice. Works in the painting series disrupt the authority of an academic style by extending this style to cardboard—a material that is often perceived as being disposable. Further, in true Pokydanets fashion, the works draw on a range of references, including pop culture, agitprop, and suprematism. The series demonstrates the ease with which what is ‘formal’ can become ‘informal’, and vice versa.

During the exhibition, discussions about the role of contemporary art in social reforms will be raised. Pokydanets’ works make evident that, to engage in reform, one should reckon with the complexities of what happened before—the methods and motifs that were once influential. This series also suggests that ‘upcycling’ is key to effective reform; that materials which are usually put in the trash can instead be used in a different way, even transformed into a surface for expression.

Viktor Pokydanets’ residence and exhibition are part of the project Kindling – Reform program organized by Sorry No Rooms Available with Baltic Art Center and Milvus Artistic Research Center. The project is supported by the Swedish Institute, European Cultural Foundation, and The beaux-arts Academy in Paris.

LENDART: ART BEYOND GALLERIES
Residences Sorry No Rooms Available

The lecture will cover the following topics:
– emergence, context and definitions of landscape art
– specifics of domestic “environmental art”
– centers of land art in Ukraine

Statement:
As a practicing artist, I found myrself in the direction of land art, site-specific art, performance, installation and fine art. I am trying to reveal the following topics: The presence of the artist in the performance and the limits of the performance,
Psychology of the viewer’s perception and Form of time of space.

In creativity, I lean towards the method of observation, detection, interaction, addition and fixation of the environment. All my works reflect or contain a piece of the landscape in some way.

I put the acquired practical experience into the theory of art by researching the specifics of the formation of land art in Ukraine and work on the dissertation “Vernacular language of Ukrainian land art”. I am creating an archive of domestic
environmental art.

I consider it necessary to study and spread knowledge about the creative interaction of Ukrainian landartists with the aim of elevating the cordocentric component in modern art and outside of it, since the dialogue of man with nature is his primordial and integral part of life, which today, in the time of global transformations, needs increased attention.
