Elena Subach – Photography as testimony and search

I invite to an open conversation where I will share my own experience of working with photography in the context of the great war – how my practice has transformed, what I have faced, and why it is sometimes important not to have answers right away.
We will talk about how photographic thinking changes in times of instability, how to find a form for vulnerable topics, and what it is like to be an artist in a time when reality is often stronger than any metaphor.
We will also touch upon the question of the boundaries and status of photography:
Is it a contemporary art today?
And how to combine documentary with artistic expression?

The SNRA residence draws attention to the role of culture and art during the russian-Ukrainian war, aims to implement institutionally critical projects related to cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), development of artistic-cultural institutions. The SNRA residency program and the Elena Subach’s participation were implemented thanks to the grant support from The Académie des beaux-arts in Paris (French Academy of Fine Arts)
