The title of the exhibition is “Naïve is not naïve” because it is naïve in form, but global in content. The exhibition is one of the results of the research program on naïve art of Transcarpathia, supported by the art residence “Sorry, no rooms”. Its goal is to show the diversity of this powerful art movement in the region and the dynamics of its development. In the course of the work, we only managed to emphasize some of them in order to outline further research paths. Due to the fact that most artists are not members of official creative unions and do not lead an active public life, it was radically difficult to find them. Sometimes we just asked sellers in coffee shops, and even taxi drivers helped us. That’s how we found landscape painter Stas Andrievsky, who organized an exhibition and sale of paintings right on the street, artist, restaurateur, gallery owner, film buff Serhiy Kolodnytsky, and muralist Kateryna Tuz. We contacted 106-year-old artist Ilya Brovdi from the village of Kolchyno. The local visionary artistic community was enriched by artists who were forced to come here since the beginning of the full-scale war. Anastasia Tymchenko lived in Mariupol. Olena Alyabieva came from Kharkiv.
In creating the exhibition, we tried to show not only the diversity of styles and techniques, but also the dynamics and directions of development of the art of auto-didacts. We also tried to emphasize their peculiar artistic and philosophical power. Thus, in naïve art, the very act of transmitting an internal state, an experience, the very desire to express oneself without filtering, a kind of intention, a peculiar form of conceptualism, is valuable.
The SNRA residence draws attention to the role of culture and art during the russian-Ukrainian war, aims to implement institutionally critical projects related to cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), development of artistic-cultural institutions.
The SNRA residency program, the group exhibition and Oleksandr Liapin’s participation were implemented thanks to the grant support from The Académie des beaux-arts in Paris (French Academy of Fine Arts)
