SORRY NO ROOMS AVAILABLE ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR UKRAINIAN ARTISTS DURING RUSSIA’S FULL-SCALE WAR AGAINST UKRAINE<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorry No Rooms Available is an international contemporary art residency that creates conditions for artistic practice embedded in the artistic and cultural environment of Uzhgorod and Transcarpathia. In return, residents commit to the production of a contextual project\/exhibition in the city of Uzhhorod or in the surrounding region, as well as their choice of an artist talk, lecture\/workshop, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorry No Rooms Available is one of the few year-round residencies of contemporary art in Ukraine and one of the few private non-profit contemporary art-oriented organizations in the Transcarpathian region. Since April 1, 2016, it has been operating at the Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel in Uzhhorod. About 10-12 participants take part in the residency each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an artistic initiative, the residency encourages participants to put their work in dialogue with the place, the region\u2019s cultural heritage, and its rich and complex history. Artists will have the opportunity to integrate themselves into the local art scene. Residents should note that Transcarpathia is the westernmost region in Ukraine, and a space where many different nationalities and communities live. The experience of this kind of multinational periphery encourages artists to seek new forms for contemporary art initiatives and practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2016 to 2021, about 90 participants took part in the residency, and there were approximately 30 solo and 6 group exhibitions; 2 special programs – which together included about 30 workshops; about 90 artist talks and 30 lectures; 12 online publications, translations from English into Ukrainian, devoted to the theory and critique of art, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist in Need. Today, Sorry No Rooms Available is still receiving participants from the regions of Ukraine where war actions are taking place. At present, the residency, which was rented one room from the Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel, which has a maximum capacity of 1 to 2 residents at a time. Has been increased the number of rented rooms to 4 (which can accommodate 4-5 participants at a time). Because of the extreme circumstances and the dire need to house those fleeing Russian aggression, the residency team would like to ask for your financial and material support in order to rent expanded space to accommodate the artists and cultural workers in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the place<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel is a place that combines architectural phenomenon, social context, cultural scene, and historical narrative. The building of the Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel is a monumental architectural form of brutalism built in the Soviet period in 1979. Since then, the hotel has become an ambiguous symbol of Soviet Uzhhorod and Transcarpathia, which once framed the western gates of the Iron Curtain, year after year weaving itself into the cultural landscape of both Soviet and post-Soviet generations of Uzhhorod. The hotel environment still hides the atmosphere of the times of socialist utopian architecture, with all its unique details, distortions, and strange order. The founders of the residence suggest considering the phenomenon of the Intourist-Zakarpattya Hotel as a specific historical route, as a book that should be read by the resident while living in it day after day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guideline for residence projects is the context of Transcarpathia or Uzhgorod. In particular, it could be a separate research project on the hotel as a place of architectural, cultural, and historical crossroads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promotion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coordinator, curator, assistant, translator, designer help the participant in the implementation of the project at the residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SNRA residence promotes the implementation of projects at the location of the Intourist-Zakarpattia hotel, namely in the spaces: Red Bar Yama, Glass space \u201cPyvzavod\u201d, as well as in the Korydor gallery and other exhibition spaces of the city or region. Cooperation with the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts is also possible. The residence provides media support on the residence page and its social media pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
