Clemens\u2019 performative installation based around an assembly of sounds, objects, images, gestures, and spatial connections collected during his two research visits to Sorry No Rooms Available residency as part of the Community of Communities program. Return to the 13th Floor explores the recursive character of spaces and communities within the walls of the hotel, as each distinct floor is revealed through evolving loops of ambient sound and activated objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can a settlement be transformed into a living museum, and its historical heritage into a resource for community recovery and development? We invite you to join the conversation on the decolonial rethinking of Novovorontsovka\u2019s space and memory!
Cultural heritage is not a set of frozen artifacts behind glass, but a living fabric of memory that requires continuous reflection\u2014especially today, as Ukraine frees itself from imperial and Soviet narratives. Novovorontsovka is a unique area within the Great Meadow and Black Sea steppe, where cultures, events, and human destinies have intersected for centuries. This project offers a broader perspective: viewing the settlement as a holistic cultural landscape where the museum extends beyond exhibit halls into the streets, architecture, natural environment, and daily stories of its residents.
Throughout the project, artists, architects, urbanists, and researchers from Odesa, Kherson, and other cities immersed themselves in museum archives, records, and local accounts. Their work resulted in artistic visions and urban scenarios for the future. A key focus of this reinterpretation is a decolonial perspective and the inclusion of the contemporary Russo-Ukrainian war\u2014capturing the community\u2019s experience of resistance, loss, and daily resilience.
This exhibition does not offer rigid solutions or finalized plans. Instead, it serves as an open invitation to dialogue with the community\u2014residents, youth, educators, veterans, and museum workers\u2014who are the true co-creators of this space. Local history can become a catalyst for growth, and cultural heritage a foundation for modern identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is part of the \u201cRevival of Small Towns in Kherson Region: Decolonial Artistic and Urban Practices\u201d program, implemented within the Ukrainian-Swedish \u201cCommunity of Communities\u201d framework supported by the Swedish Institute.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019d like to share wonderful news \u2013 From August 24th-28th, 2026 a symposium for the COMMUNITY OF COMMUNITIES project will be held in Uzhhorod which will be attended by representatives of the five project partners: SNRA (Uzhhorod), Baltic Art Center (Visby, Sweden), Milvus Artistic Research Center (Knislinge, Sweden), Precarnia (Kyiv), and Urban Re-Public (Kherson\/Odesa). In Uzhhorod, they will be joined by Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas, the project\u2019s external advisors. The symposium will be hosted by Sorry No Rooms Available (SNRA). During the symposium, the participants will share and discuss the work that they have conducted in the frame of the project, including through a series of public events\u2014an exhibition, sound installation, artist\u2019s talk, and publication launch. In addition to these programs, the participants will also conduct excursions to various cultural institutions and initiatives in and around Uzhhorod. The symposium program is developed by Petro Ryaska with Alex Fisher, Anna Norberg, and Helena Selder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival of Naked Forms, in collaboration with Sorry No Rooms Available, presents the Czech-Ukrainian \u2018Festival of Architectural Naked Forms\u2019, which combines manifestos on naked bodies \u2013 both those of performers and architectural forms. Through art, and in particular performance art and its inherent nudity, the project draws attention to the protection of architectural cultural heritage, especially during the russian-Ukrainian war, when cities in Ukraine are disappearing as a result of russian bombing and other factors. The venue for the performance festival is the SNRA residence on location at the Intourist-Zakarpattia hotel complex, which combines an architectural phenomenon, a social context, a cultural cross-section and a historical narrative. In particular, the hotel building is a monumental 15-storey example of Brutalist architecture, built in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sustainability of nudity means strengthening resilience and inner artistic power, leading to independence from adverse conditions, whether climatic, financial, or political. The Festival of Nude Forms seeks sustainability. It aims to maintain awareness that preserving nudity in art is important. Through nudity in art, universal values such as tolerance, openness, honesty, and solidarity are upheld. If we uphold these values in art, we will make artistic creation involving nudity sustainable for creators of all ages, all forms of expression, and all body types. FNAF aims to be sustainable in its own right as an independent platform. It wants society to remain open to nude art forms and to understand them as important for its own sustainability toward greater humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are pleased to present \u201cVuzh Misto\u201d (Snake city), an exhibition of the new generation Stvorinnya group. In the exhibition, which will be held at the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, the zoo-anthropological and social image of the fantastic inhabitants of Uzhhorod will be shown. Considering the relativity of the existence of phenomena and attempting to look at us (humans) through the eyes of the animal world, the exhibition asks whether an animal can exist simultaneously with the dominant anthropocentric world and inquires after what and who will remain after the human era.
\u201cThey simply became snakes when suddenly something happened and changed them. Existing for some time, they did not even know that they were no longer the same. Another process is taking place. They cannot remember where they started, and in an attempt to adapt their memory blurred and returned somewhere where they had already been.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the night of April 19-20, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine is the only region in the country where there is currently no curfew. Elsewhere in Ukraine, it is forbidden to stay outside during the night (specific times vary by region). As a response to this relative freedom of Zakarpattia, artist Anton\u00edn Brinda from the Czech Republic, current resident of SNRA, realises his performance-research \u201cNightlife: Uzhhorod.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist will spend one night (from sunset until sunrise) in the public space of Uzhhorod. The aim of the project is simple: to enjoy the possibility of staying outside all night long, and observe the city and its changing rhythm. Throughout the night, the artist will post online one random photo from the action every full hour. The photos will be abstract so as not to reveal any critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am passionate about extensive urban environments, peripheries in various senses of the word, and the \u201cnomadic\u201d way of living. My mobile lifestyle is precarious yet voluntary. Aware of my privileges as a white male and EU passport holder, I strive to go beyond the notion of ordinary tourism and to reflect critically on issues related to international mobility and political geography through my art. Whenever possible, I step outside the \u201cFortress Europe\u201d to learn, pay respect to, and connect with peoples and countries that Western paradigms describe as the \u201cdeveloping world\u201d. I am a performance and conceptual artist. My venues include streets, playgrounds, parks, highways, shopping malls, rivers, housing estates, supermarkets, buses, trains, forests, fields, flats, bridges, pedestrian crossings, churches, monasteries, metro stations, staircases, boats, as well as art galleries. The main tools of my minimalist artworks are my body and the specific sites where the actions take place. The performances can last from a few minutes to many hours and be almost invisible or highly expressive. Through my art, I explore the role of the individual in the globalized, mobile world and the power structures that shape our daily lives and movements. My passion for performance art is both practical and theoretical. I am active within the scene as a curator and facilitator, give lectures and workshops, organize discussions, foster networks among cultural workers, and help popularize performance art among the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A word from the author:<\/em>
\u201cSince childhood, I have needed special dolls with their own personalities. By creating them, I freed myself from traumatic experiences. The characters, objects, anthropomorphic masks, and portraits were created from things I found nearby. Paper, textiles, clay, plastic, food \u2014 mixed techniques and mixed feelings. Everything I do is a reaction to events that have happened or are happening. This is the most effective therapy for me. I have no formal art education, and I had to get used to being called an artist or even a sculptor. I consider frank conversation a real gift, and working together a special relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short history of the Two Augusts project: Two artists, Philippe Marcus and Misha Zavalny, meet in Paris shortly before Philip leaves for the residency \u201cSorry No Rooms Available\u201d in Ukraine. They decide to buy two disposable film cameras and take photographs in parallel during the whole residency period: one in Paris, the other in Uzhhorod, a city in western Ukraine. Since they cannot share images, they choose to send each other short poems every day. Each artist then looks for a photo subject based on the poem, in the place where they are.The goal of the project is to create a book and an exhibition in which images and poems interact in a non-narrative way. Two parallel but very different realities. The artists, living at the same time in very different contexts, try to communicate through artistic media: photography and poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My project Tomorrow Will Be Cloudy with Clearings explores the experience of alienation, silence, and the search for home as a state of presence. I turn to moments when the familiar suddenly feels foreign, and silence opens new ways of perception.
Light, space, and pause are tools for working with memory and inner movement. I create situations that place the viewer at the boundary between body and light, between loss and calm, inviting them to experience a return to themselves.
The path in this practice is not a direction but a way of remaining in motion while accepting uncertainty. Movement becomes a form of trust, and coincidence \u2014 a guide where maps no longer work. The project touches upon the ability to stay within the process, allowing the current of experience to shape us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ELENA SUBACH – LIGHT WAVES OF WARM COLOURS ARE THE FIRST TO BE ABSORBED BY WATER

At the core of my project Light Waves of Warm Colours Are the First to Be Absorbed by Water lie reflections on light, water, and the border. The work was inspired by Anna Atkins \u2014 the British naturalist and photographer who, in the nineteenth century, created the world\u2019s first illustrated book using photography; her first images were prints of seaweed.
My own gaze turned toward plants that grow on the edge \u2014 between water and land, in the borderlands. If the human body is made up of sixty-five per cent water, what is the body of a plant composed of \u2014 one that touches two worlds every day?
In the cyanotype technique, light becomes an instrument of memory. On a surface coated with a light-sensitive iron solution, sunlight leaves an imprint \u2014 a reaction occurs, and the paper turns a deep blue. This colour is the trace of a wave carried by a photon, the final glimmer of warmth before it dissolves in water. They say light does not reach the full depth of a river, and not everyone can make it to the opposite shore. Perhaps this blue is the memory of an attempt to cross the threshold where the visible ends.
The exhibition combines handmade cyanotypes and direct photographs of the places I encountered during the Sorry No Rooms Available residency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STVORINNYA GROUP \u2013 Maria-Gabriella Fediaieva, Masha Pelishenko, Vitalina Boikiv, and Svitlana Zapryliuk form a new-generation art collective. The collective was established in 2023 in Uzhhorod, Transcarpathia, where its members live and work. Together, they experiment with painting, graphics, installation, media art (new media), and performance. What unites them is a shared desire for personal expression.
The collective develops both individual and social themes, engaging with issues of identity, the human being in society, and inter-social and inter-gender relations, among others. They also address urban challenges: in the performance Overlapping the Uzh River (2024, Uzh River, Uzhhorod), the artists critically opposed the illegal development of Uzhhorod and the destruction of architectural heritage by developers.
In their first exhibition Maruda (Red Bar Yama, Intourist-Zakarpattia Hotel, Uzhhorod), the group presented their personal stories as distinct \u201cnarrative objects\u201d \u2013 the problems they wished to raise, the concerns of each member, and their self-explorations of war, childhood, memory, trauma, lived experiences, and processes of becoming. Maria-Gabriella Fediaieva, Masha Pelishenko, Vitalina Boikiv, and Svitlana Zapryliuk are also part of the formation Nemozhlyvo povtoryty (\u201cImpossible to Repeat,\u201d new media) and of Photinus Studio. The members of the collective currently study at the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barbara Le B\u00e9guec Friedman (born 1982) is an artist based in Perpignan, France. Barbara practices visual and performance art. In 2005, she started exploring the dialogue between inner and outer landscapes through mediums such as drawing, video, sound, installation and photography. From 2010 to 2017 she focuses her research on the confrontation with otherness. Her work questions the idea of labelling and the impermeability of the boxes in which we try to evolve. The notion of paradox is deeply present in her work, through the ideas like : nothing exists without its opposite, absence is a form of presence or every boundary is also a meeting point\u2026 ideas she often used as a way of questioning, of challenging once again what appears to be a single fixed reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenting unknown archival video, Natalia Shevchenko draws attention to neglected recordings that document the cultural atmosphere of a particular time and represent how art and artists interacted with society, institutions, politics, and other cultural phenomena. A rare video by Olexander Sabov from the 1998 group exhibition \u2018Museum and Contemporary Art\u2019 at the Y. Bokshay Art Museum, curator Volodymyr Dehtiariov, initiated by the PopTrans group, accidentally captures a performance by artist Natalia Shevchenko. As a means of visual documentation, the recording allows us to preserve and, in a certain way, convey the performance as a work of art that, by its nature, exists within a specific time frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sorry No Rooms Available residence is pleased to present the participant Natalia Shevchenko in July-September, 2025, in the Swedish-Ukrainian project Community of Communities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalia Shevchenko (b. 1982) is an artist from Uzhhorod. She studied at the A. Erdely College and the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts in Uzhhorod. In the late 1990s, she joined the art group Poptrans, one of the first in Ukraine to combine conceptualism with pop art. The members experimented with postmodern forms, rejecting modernist conventions \u2013 which distinguished them in the Ukrainian art scene of that time.
Beginning with collective practice, Natalia gradually developed her own artistic language, marked by consistency and depth. Her paintings are characterised by deliberate plasticity and the symbolism of images, while the compositions often resemble film stills. Her visual thinking is close to that of a director: every detail contributes to the overall impression.
For Shevchenko, the line is the principal tool \u2013 one she transforms according to her idea. In her graphic works, there is no randomness: they are complete and precise, often bordering on decorative art in their exacting execution.
In her art, Shevchenko reflects on the pressures faced by individuals in the contemporary urban environment. The central themes of her work are women\u2019s rights, freedom of expression, and the role of women in both art and traditional society. A special place is given to children\u2019s role-play as a way of grasping and mirroring reality \u2013 a tool through which the artist explores social roles, cultural codes, and the deep mechanisms of identity formation.

The presentation will also feature a time, in visio, with the Ukrainian artist Misha Zavalnyi, now living in France with which he\u2019s actually working on a book composed of texts and pictures to share their opposite but complementary experience of this particular august month 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alicia Zaton works around the animism of matter, filling her sculptures with secrets and stories. Her work is close to the body, its sensations and gestures. An architecture of intimate spaces, lived in by fluids, objects, materials and memories (wax, mirrors, tiles, latex, ceramics, archives). Her empirical research is shaped by her Polish origins and – more recently – by the search of femininity as an ancestral, hybrid and political body. A form of spirituality combining fragments of christian religion, alchemy, feminism and witchcraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u00e9a Mercier is a visual artist and independent photographer who lives and works in Paris. She creates \u201cphotographic objects\u201d that dissect the processes of image production to offer alternative perceptions and uses, in installations that take into account the viewer\u2019s presence and the exhibition space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philippe Marcus, artist and curator, practices mural painting, drawing, and writes poetry. He talks about the complexity of things and reality, exposing it to hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in France in 1989 Alicia Zaton was graduate in 2014 from the \u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure d\u2019Arts de Paris Cergy. Alicia Zaton\u2019s work crosses different timeframes and materials. Sculpture, installation, scenography and photography. She develops an empirical, intuitive and sensitive relationship with matter. Her research has led her to discover a variety of techniques, including glassblowing, metallurgy and molding. Since 2014, her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries, institutional and alternative spaces. She also participated in some group shows in Paris, Berlin, Krakow and Tcheque Republic. For several years now, she has been developing scenography work in collaboration with dancers, with an organic feel, working with matter, ice and fluids. She is involved in the creation and development of DOC! in Paris since ten years, where she organise with her collective various events like talks, exhibitions, projections or concerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sorry No Rooms Available residence is pleased to present the participant of the residence Johana Koti\u0161ov\u00e1 in June-August, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johana Koti\u0161ov\u00e1 is Assistant Professor in Documentary and Journalism at the University of Amsterdam. She has a background in journalism, social anthropology, and sociology. Johana\u2019s research interests include crisis and conflict documentation, creative professionals\u2019 safety, emotional labour, and mental well-being. Her work has been published in journals such as Journalism<\/em>, Digital Journalism<\/em>, International Journal of Press\/Politics<\/em>, Journalism Studies<\/em>, and European Journal of Communication<\/em>. She is also the book reviews editor of Media, War and Conflict<\/em>. Besides her academic work, Johana occasionally writes journalistic stories and works with creative professionals as a mental well-being counsellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project I work on at Sorry No Rooms Available focuses on creative professionals who document war crimes. It explores the many complexities and potential points of friction involved in war crime documentation: combining journalistic practices with legal and criminal standards and discourses, using diversity of new epistemological practices and tools, and dealing with technological and cybersecurity issues, ethical questions, and mental pressure. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Ukraine and beyond and interviews with creative\/media professionals, the project addresses the following questions: How do creative professionals documenting war crimes navigate differences between journalistic and legal epistemological practices and tools for gathering testimonies and visual material? How do they integrate new roles, norms, values, concepts in their creative professional identities? How do they rethink and reshape their relationships to and boundaries with criminal and legal institutions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andriy Stegura – Schedule of movements. A talk about samizdat in Uzhhorod 1989-2025.

Andriy Stegura was born in Zaporizhzhia in 1969. In 1984-88 he studied at the Uzhhorod School of Applied Arts. Since 1996, he has been a member of the art group Poptrans. Co-founder of the YA1 PRODUCT publishing house, which has been creating and popularizing self-publishing as a work of visual art practices since 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first issue of YA1 PRODUCT in 1989 was published in 10 handmade copies (ink, pen). The next editions of Ya1 PRODUCT were published in 1996 (2nd issue), 1998 (3rd issues). At the same time, Andriy Stegura, co-authored by Vadym Harabaruk, Marcel Onysko, and Robert Saller, published many other samizdat publications with a total circulation of 26 products to date. In particular, in 1997 \u201cForest Song\u201d, in 1999 \u201c36 Parts of the Body\u201d and \u201cSiyaya\u201d, in 2000 \u201cThe Gift\u201d (100 copies). From 1998 to 2001, there was a joint workshop on Shumna Street where they kept \u201cOnboard Diaries\u201d based on the principle of a ship\u2019s logbook. \u201cThey were these stitched white sheets with an original cover with a title. Anyone could write what they wanted and whenever they wanted, including the guests of the workshop. As soon as one diary ended, the next one started. No pauses))\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2016, he launched the long-term project SYNII. At the moment, the SYNII project has realized 7 art books with original works by about 50 artists from many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sorry No Rooms Available residence is pleased to present the participant Andriy Stegura in April-June, 2025, in the Swedish-Ukrainian project Community of Communities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andriy Stegura was born in Zaporizhzhia in 1969. In 1984-88 he studied at the Uzhhorod School of Applied Arts. Since 1996, he has been a member of the art group Poptrans. Co-founder of the YA1 PRODUCT publishing house, which has been creating and popularizing self-publishing as a work of visual art practices since 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first issue of YA1 PRODUCT in 1989 was published in 10 handmade copies (ink, pen). The next editions of Ya1 PRODUCT were published in 1996 (2nd issue), 1998 (3rd issues). At the same time, Andriy Stegura, co-authored by Vadym Harabaruk, Marcel Onysko, and Robert Saller, published many other samizdat publications with a total circulation of 26 products to date. In particular, in 1997 \u201cForest Song\u201d, in 1999 \u201c36 Parts of the Body\u201d and \u201cSiyaya\u201d, in 2000 \u201cThe Gift\u201d (100 copies). From 1998 to 2001, there was a joint workshop on Shumna Street where they kept \u201cOnboard Diaries\u201d based on the principle of a ship\u2019s logbook. \u201cThey were these stitched white sheets with an original cover with a title. Anyone could write what they wanted and whenever they wanted, including the guests of the workshop. As soon as one diary ended, the next one started. No pauses))\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2016, he launched the long-term project SYNII. At the moment, the SYNII project has realized 7 art books with original works by about 50 artists from many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andriy Stegura lives and works in Uzhhorod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community of Communities is a Swedish-Ukrainian cooperation project being carried out in 2025-2026 by five cultural organizations. The project partners are: Sorry No Rooms Available (Zakarpatska Oblast, Ukraine), Baltic Art Center (Gotland, Sweden), Milvus Artistic Research Center (Sk\u00e5ne, Sweden), the Center for Neurodiverse and Neurotypical Artists (Kyiv, Ukraine), and Urban Re-Public (Kherson Oblast, Ukraine). Urbonas Studio (Lithuania\/USA) is following the project as external advisors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community of Communities is catalyzing social transformation in Ukraine by supporting professional development on the rural, regional, and national levels. The project is focused on strengthening cultural institutions and cultural heritage. The title quotes Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian public intellectual who has referred to his home country as a \u201ccommunity of communities,\u201d forged by centuries of creative resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community of Communities (2025-2026) is a continuation and development of the Swedish-Ukrainian project KINDLING – REFORM – (2022-2023). The project is funded by the Swedish Institute\u2019s Ukraine Cooperation Programme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The residence program Sorry No Rooms Available for 2024-2025 aims to implement institutionally critical projects related to cultural heritage, the development of artistic and cultural institutions and, in particular, project – educational programs. The proposal for projects at the residence is to create a contextual project with the above-mentioned topic in the city of Uzhhorod or the region. As a result, an exhibition (project, performance, work, etc.), an artistic talk and a lecture (lecture or workshops) are possible\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorry No Rooms Available is an international residence of contemporary art that creates conditions for artistic practice and the stay of participants in the artistic and cultural environment of Uzhgorod and Transcarpathia. The residence of SNRA is located in the hotel complex Intourist-Zakarpattia, in the city of Uzhhorod. Hotel Intourist-Zakarpattia is a place that combines an architectural phenomenon, a social context, a cultural section and a historical narrative. The SNRA Residence draws attention to the critical role of culture and art during the russian-Ukrainian war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariia Luiza Filatova was born in Zaporizhzhia. Graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. Works mainly with oil painting. After the start of a full-scale invasion, the main subject of the artist\u2019s works becomes the landscape of her native city, brought to the status of a sign. In 2022 and 2023, the artist spends a long time in Japan on an art residency, this experience establishes in her works the inherent meditativeness and tendency to simplify the form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Subcarpathian Ruthenia context in itself

The artistic research project is based on research of archival materials (films, photographs) from the period 1919-1939 from the area of Transcarpatia and filming with witnesses and archivists in Ukraine. The aim of the project is to subject the archival film prints and photographs from the Czechia, Slovakia and Ukraine to a postcolonial reading, cataloguing and making them available (in the process of repatriation).
Central European countries such as Czechia are marked with the term colonial exceptionalism, which means that even though the countries didn\u2019t have any colonies they still benefit from the global colonialism economically and culturally. The main question of the project is if we could see some resemblance of colonialist practices also in the short period of time when Subcarpathian Ruthenia was part of Czechoslovakia in 1919\u20131939.
The research project has already started with the interpretation of the photographic and ethnographic work of well-known Czechoslovak ethnographer Vojt\u011bch Suk, however the main focus of the research nowadays is on the archival film prints, amateur and experimental filmmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom\u00e1\u0161 Vobo\u0159il is an artist, photographer, filmmaker and film programmer from Prague (Czechia). He received bachelor degrees from Film Theory and History and also from Photography in Prague where he currently studies at Centre of Audiovisual Studies (FAMU). His focus is primarily in analog photography and film, experimental filmmaking, socially engaged art, archival practices, sound art and postcolonial studies. He is a programme director of the Marienbad Film Festival (CZ) which focuses on experimental filmmaking and he is a member of industrial techno, dark-wave band O\u0141M and performative-poetic group STVO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena Subach (1980) is a Ukrainian visual female artist originally from Chervonohrad, she currently lives and works in Lviv. Her artistic practice focuses on the exploration of memory, space, religion, tradition, the construction of history, and the consequences of the Soviet colonial past. She works with themes of the fragility of human bodies, death and war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her work, Elena often refers to liminal spaces as a visual metaphor for the internal state of a person experiencing change, loss or rethinking of experience. She works with photography and collage as a means of archiving and reconstructing memory, combining staged and documentary images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena\u2019s photographs have been published in numerous media, including the British Journal of Photography, Weltkunst, Vogue Poland, The Guardian, S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung, and many others. She has received a number of awards, including the New East Photo Prize from the Calvert Foundation (2016), the Future Talents nomination (2019) and the Gaude Polonia scholarship (2019). Her work has been presented at international exhibitions, including Nordic House in Reykjavik, Photo Elys\u00e9e Museum of Photography in Lausanne, Kunstforum Wien in Vienna, Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv, Willy Brandt House in Berlin, the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC, and the Tycho Brahe Museum in Vienna, Sweden. In the fall of 2022, the British publishing house Besides Press published Elena\u2019s book Hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the workshop:
– We will explore the influence of the body on public space and vice versa through individual and group work;
– analyze presence as a state and a sign it creates;
enrich personal research, develop our own ideas into a project;
– artistic work in different spatial environments to create final performances;
– getting to know the work of contemporary artists and groups, learning about performance festivals and events in Ukraine and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop consists of two parts:
Part 1:
– 3 days, 3 hours each, on April 11-15, 2025. Theory and practice.
Part 2:
– 4 days of 3 hours + 1 day of public performances, April 22-24. Practice, research of different spatial environments, creation of final works.
Number of participants: max. 12 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A detailed schedule of each part will be provided to the participants before the start of the workshop. It will include daily three-hour meetings, theoretical lectures, practical exercises, individual and group work, analysis of the work of contemporary artists and groups working in the field of performance art. The second part will also involve the preparation and delivery of public performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The schedule can be adjusted according to the needs and wishes of the participants. Participation in the workshop requires attendance at each meeting, active work, initiative and readiness for experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yaryna Shumska was born in 1989 is a visual artist, performer, curator and lecturer based in Ukraine. Her art and research practice focuses on the concept of presence expressed through the body and the visual sign it creates. It is about presence as a manifestation of the \u201chere and now\u201d, the spoken and unsaid, what we say out loud and what remains between the lines. In her practice, she uses performance, painting, installation, photo and video documentation as media. Graduated from the Lviv National Academy of Arts (monumental painting). She was a grant holder of the \u201cGaude Polonia\u201d scholarship program of the Minister of Culture of Poland. Yaryna is an author of solo exhibitions and art projects in Ukraine, Poland, and Spain, a participant in numerous exhibitions, performance art festivals, and conferences in Ukraine, Poland, Italy, Norway, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Thailand, Canada, USA etc. She is a co-organiser and co-curator of the \u201cSchool of Performance\u201d (2019), \u201cFNAF in Lviv\u201d in the framework of the International festival \u201cDays of Art Performance in Lviv\u201d (2024), online residency \u00a8At the place\u00a8 and \u00a8Performance Archiv. Ukraine\u00a8 (2020).
Her recent works were presented at Venice International Performance Week VIPAW (Venice, Italy), Arctic Action (Svalbard, Norway).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SNRA residence draws attention to the role of culture and art during the russian-Ukrainian war, aims to implement institutionally critical projects related to cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), development of artistic-cultural institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
