Natalia Shevchenko – Video Archive Film ‘98

Presenting unknown archival video, Natalia Shevchenko draws attention to neglected recordings that document the cultural atmosphere of a particular time and represent how art and artists interacted with society, institutions, politics, and other cultural phenomena. A rare video by Olexander Sabov from the 1998 group exhibition ‘Museum and Contemporary Art’ at the Y. Bokshay Art Museum, curator Volodymyr Dehtiariov, initiated by the PopTrans group, accidentally captures a performance by artist Natalia Shevchenko. As a means of visual documentation, the recording allows us to preserve and, in a certain way, convey the performance as a work of art that, by its nature, exists within a specific time frame.
The SNRA residence draws attention to the role of culture and art during the russian-Ukrainian war, aims to implement institutionally critical projects related to cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), and facilitate the development of artistic-cultural institutions. The SNRA residency program, the Community of Communities project and Natalia Shevchenko’s participation are funded by the Swedish Institute in the frame of its Ukraine Cooperation Programme.
