A portrait from the back, a neck, a torso, the interior of a hotel corridor – all these are a series of images that are not directly related to each other, but form a state of some vagueness similar to a dream. Stories in the viewer’s imagination can connect and disconnect. Some of the images may never find an interpretation. For me, this exhibition is not about the depicted objects, but about the feelings that this series can evoke. In today’s circumstances, in the context of art, one wants to avoid direct statements (there are social planes where this happens, and it is more appropriate). In a certain sense, for me, this exhibition is about the dream of creative reflection, when it seems impossible to say anything. I like that in the English language the concepts of sleep and dreams are expressed by one word “dream”. And this ability to eliminate, in my opinion, is key to understanding our reality in the context of artistic practices.

Luka Basov’s participation in the SNRA residency in September-November 2022 is part of the Emergency Residencies international project funded by the Creative Europe program and thanks to the support of the European Cultural Foundation. Kyiv Biennale   together with the Assortment Room (Ivano-Frankivsk), Meet Factory (Prague), KAIR Residency (Kosice) and Hablarenarte (Madrid), Sorry No Rooms Available Residence (Uzhhorod). and Khashchi (Kyiv), we invited 12 professionals to a residency that will allow them to develop their artistic activities. The initiative aims to support artistic practices that are the result of research that do not receive enough institutional/commercial support. The project was created to support artistic communities from all over the country, as well as those Ukrainian artists (or artists previously based in Ukraine) who had to leave the country due to the Russian invasion.
